Pulsar 0.4.4

This release adds Hexium as a second place to get mods, adds three games, brings your profiles over from your previous mod manager, and keeps your mod list current while Pulsar is open.

New

Mods from Hexium. Valheim, How to Fish, Burglin’ Gnomes and Sunkenland now browse, install and update from Hexium as well as Thunderstore. Each mod shows once, and an update comes from whichever source has the newest version. When that is a different source from the one you installed from, Pulsar shows you before it changes anything. You can turn a source off in Settings.

Three new games. How to Fish, Burglin’ Gnomes and Sunkenland.

Bring your profiles over. The first time you open a game, Pulsar offers to bring over the profiles your previous mod manager has for it. You can do it later from Manage profiles > Import profile. Your other manager’s files are only read, never changed.

Update from a mod’s page. A mod’s page now has its own Update button when a newer version is out.

Improved

Mod list stays current. Pulsar checks for new mods and updates every few hours while it’s open.

Fixed

Missing mod files. If files a mod needs have gone missing, Pulsar downloads them again before it deploys, instead of after.

Pulsar 0.4.3

This release makes a first run on Linux work for games Steam installs as a Linux build, and tells you when files in the game folder are stopping a mod from installing.

New

Linux builds on Linux. Valheim, Hollow Knight: Silksong and Muck now start with mods from Pulsar when Steam has installed their Linux build. Before, Pulsar asked for a Proton setup that those installs never have. Pulsar starts Steam first if it isn’t running. A game you have set to use Proton in Steam works as it did. (#17)

Files in the way. When a mod can’t be installed because files Pulsar didn’t put there are already in the game folder, Play stops and lists them. Move files and play moves them into a
pulsar-moved-aside
folder inside the game folder and carries on. Nothing is deleted.

Fixed

Hollow Knight: Silksong on macOS. Mods now load. Pulsar looked for this game’s mod loader in the wrong place.

Copy log on Linux. A copied log pasted with
?
where dashes and ellipses were. It now pastes cleanly.

“Deploy complete” when it wasn’t. Pulsar no longer says a deploy is complete when a mod was left out, and says which.

Switching games during a launch. A launch that fails after you have switched to another game no longer shows its error on that game.

Known issue

Steam on Linux. If a game closes as soon as it starts, open Steam yourself and press Play again.

Pulsar 0.4.2

This release lets you add mods Thunderstore doesn’t have, bring in profiles from a profile code, and find your way around a big mod list.

New

Add manually. Import from link is now Add manually: paste a link as before, or choose a
.zip
or
.dll
file. A file you add becomes a local mod in that profile. It never updates, and if you already have the same mod installed, the local copy replaces it.

Local mods folder. Open local mods folder on Installed Mods takes you to the profile’s local mods. Drop a new build in and Pulsar picks it up the next time you press Play, so mod makers can test without packaging anything.

Import a profile. On Manage profiles, Import profile takes a profile code or a
.r2z
file and makes a new profile from it, with the same mods, load order and config. You see the list before anything installs.

Modpacks as their own profile. A modpack’s page offers Install as new profile. Pulsar makes a profile named after the pack, with every mod at the version the pack lists, and leaves your current profile alone.

Dyslexia-friendly font. Turn on Use a dyslexia-friendly font in Settings to switch the app to OpenDyslexic.

Modding Discord and wiki. Each game’s settings link to its modding community’s Discord and wiki, where it has them, so you know where to ask when a mod breaks. (#10)

Improved

Installed Mods. Opens on Mods Added: the mods you chose, with their dependencies tucked away. Turn on Show dependencies to see what each one is there for. Load Order shows the full list, numbered, and you drag mods into the order you want.

Browse filters. Browse has All, Mods and Modpacks tabs, and a Categories filter. Click a category to require it, again to exclude it, and choose whether mods match any or all of them. (#9)

Refresh. Browse has a Refresh button that fetches the latest mods and versions without restarting Pulsar.

Known issue

Local mods after a restore. If Pulsar restores your mod list from its backup, a local mod whose file is no longer in the local mods folder is removed the next time Pulsar checks the folder. Add the file again to get it back.

Pulsar 0.4.1

This release tidies up browsing and gives you more control over your load order.

Browse now hides NSFW and deprecated mods by default. Bring them back with Show NSFW mods in Settings, or Show deprecated mods in each game’s settings; mods you already have always show under Installed Mods. Requested on our Discord (#16). Other mod managers and similar tools published on Thunderstore no longer appear in browse either. Mod and author names now read with spaces where Thunderstore uses underscores, so
BepInExPack_Valheim
reads as BepInExPack Valheim.

When deprecated mods are shown, each one carries an amber Deprecated tag on its Install button, and installing or updating anything that includes a deprecated mod always shows the summary first. The Install buttons in browse have a lighter look too: outlined until you hover, so a page of mods is easier on the eye.

You can now set your load order. Right-click an installed mod and choose Move up or Move down to decide which mod wins when two replace the same file. Pulsar applies the new order right away, or when the game closes if it’s running.

Installed mods now show important tags above their name: Deprecated for a mod its author has retired, and Missing Required Mods when something it needs was removed or turned off. Open the mod to see each one, with Install or Turn on right there.

Pulsar downloads the update by itself. When Update 0.4.1 appears at the bottom of the app, click it and Pulsar restarts on the new version. The first time it starts, Pulsar reloads each game’s mod list, so be online for that first launch.

Pulsar 0.4.0

A big one: mods now install in the standard BepInEx layout, removing and updating say what they will do first, and the Log tab shows your game’s own log.

New

Mods in their own folders. Each mod now installs into its own folder under
BepInEx/plugins
, the layout most mod guides and community helpers expect. Your existing mods move over the first time you play, with nothing to download.

TCG Card Shop Simulator. You can now add it and mod it. On Linux it runs through Proton.

Any version of a mod. On a mod you have installed, pick an older or newer version from its version list and choose Change to.

Modpacks install as packed. A modpack installs every mod at the exact version the pack lists, and the summary shows anything it moves up or down.

Your game’s log in the Log tab. The Log tab shows BepInEx’s output next to Pulsar’s own, for the game you last played. Copy log copies it for sharing, and Open log folder and Open mods folder take you straight there. Requested on our Discord. (#14)

Improved

Removing a mod. Pulsar lists the mods it came with that nothing else uses and removes them too, unless you untick them. If other mods need the one you are removing, it tells you they may stop working.

Disabling a mod. If other mods need it, you choose whether to disable them too. Turning a mod back on turns on what it needs.

Update all. One confirmation lists every update before anything changes. A mod that can’t be updated is skipped and named, and the rest still update.

Warnings. Mods at risk and deprecated mods are marked in amber, and the install summary says a mod may not work rather than will not.

Launching from Steam. For most games, starting the game from Steam now runs it without mods. Play in Pulsar still loads them.

Add a game. Each card shows the systems a game runs on as icons in its corner.

Fixed

On Linux, games that load mods through
version.dll
. Under Proton, mods now load for games whose BepInEx pack uses it, such as Inscryption. Any Wine settings you had set yourself are kept.

A different game folder. If Steam runs your game from another folder than the one Pulsar set up, Play now says so and names both folders, instead of starting the game without mods.

Browse in Game settings. It opens at the folder shown above it.

Updating

Pulsar downloads the update by itself. When Update 0.4.0 appears at the bottom of the app, click it and Pulsar restarts on the new version.

Pulsar 0.3.3

Three fixes: finding Steam, the order of Browse, and a wrong warning when changing a game’s folder.

Fixed

Steam in a custom folder. On Windows, if Steam lives somewhere like
C:\Steam
or on a second drive, Pulsar now finds it and launches your game. It used to look only in the default folder. (#11)

Pinned mods first. The packages a community pins on Thunderstore, like the BepInEx pack, now sit at the top of Browse under every sort, as they do on Thunderstore. (#12)

Changing a game’s folder. If you pointed Pulsar at the same game folder with different capital letters, or through a linked folder, it could say your mods had been “left behind” and should be deleted by hand. That was the live copy. Pulsar now checks whether it is the same folder and says nothing when it is.

Updating

Pulsar downloads the update by itself. When Update 0.3.3 appears at the bottom of the app, click it and Pulsar restarts on the new version.

Pulsar 0.3.2

Two fixes for Linux.

Fixed

Starting Steam on Ubuntu. On recent Ubuntu, Pulsar could fail to start Steam when you pressed Play. It now starts Steam the same way your app menu does.

Window edges on Linux. The window’s content could sit against the edge of its frame until you resized or maximised it. It now sits inside the frame from the moment Pulsar opens.

Pulsar 0.3.1

The first signed release for Windows. Nothing else changes from 0.3.0.

Improved

Signed for Windows. The installer and the app are signed by SolrLabs LLC, so Windows shows who published Pulsar when you install it.

Pulsar 0.3.0

Crash reports and usage statistics you choose, and a way to ask for help.

New

Your choice of what’s sent. When you accept the license, two checkboxes choose whether Pulsar sends anonymous usage statistics and crash reports. Change either one later in Settings. The privacy page says what each one sends.

Crash reports. After a crash, the next start shows the report and exactly what it contains. Nothing is sent until you click Send.

Get help on Discord. Settings and Add a game link to the Pulsar Discord.

Improved

Deleting a profile. A game’s only profile can’t be deleted, so Delete is greyed out with the reason shown under it.

Removing a game. The option to delete its mod files only appears when there are mod files to delete.

Pulsar 0.2.10

A new way to move between games, a right-click menu for mods, and no more freezes while Pulsar works.

New

Game rail. Your games sit in a rail at the side of the app, replacing the Choose a game screen. Click one to switch.

Right-click a mod. Installed mods have a right-click menu. Removing a mod asks first, and if another mod needs it, Pulsar names that mod.

Improved

Title bar. Windows and macOS keep their own window buttons. On Linux, Pulsar draws a title bar with GNOME-style buttons, a frame and resize edges.

Turning mods on and off. The list updates in place instead of reloading.

First catalog download. The first time you open a game, Pulsar shows the download’s progress while the mod list loads.

Fixed

Freezes. The app could stop responding while it loaded the mod list, installed mods or switched profiles. That work now runs in the background, and the app stays usable.

Pulsar 0.2.9

Steam on macOS, more frequent update checks, and the keyboard on Installed Mods.

Improved

Update checks. Pulsar now checks for an update every hour while it’s open, as well as when it starts.

Keyboard. You can reach and use each installed mod’s card from the keyboard.

Fixed

Steam on macOS. If Steam was closed, a game started from Pulsar couldn’t connect to it, so lobbies and online play failed. Pulsar now opens Steam first and waits for it before launching.

Pulsar 0.2.8

A Linux menu entry and a fix for playing without mods.

New

Pulsar in your app menu. On Linux, the AppImage adds Pulsar and its icon to your app menu the first time it runs. Move the file and the entry follows it on the next start.

Fixed

Play without mods. On macOS, and for Proton games on Linux, Play without mods failed on a game with no mods installed yet. It now starts the game.
